Painting Description
"Divan Japonais" is a lithograph poster created in 1893 by the French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. It is one of his most famous works and exemplifies the artist's fascination with the nightlife of Paris, particularly the Montmartre district, which was known for its bohemian lifestyle and entertainment venues. The poster was commissioned to promote the Divan Japonais, a popular café-concert and nightclub at the time, and it reflects the influence of Japanese art and the Japonisme trend that was prevalent among European artists in the late 19th century.
Measuring 80.9 x 60.9 cm, "Divan Japonais" features a striking composition with bold outlines and a limited color palette, characteristics of Toulouse-Lautrec's style. The image depicts three figures: the dancer Jane Avril, a regular subject of Toulouse-Lautrec's art, is seen sitting in the audience; the writer Édouard Dujardin is portrayed in the foreground; and the singer Yvette Guilbert, whose head is famously cropped out of the frame, is performing on stage. This unconventional cropping was influenced by Japanese prints and photography, and it adds a sense of immediacy and movement to the scene.
The poster is not only a promotion for the venue but also a commentary on the social and cultural milieu of the time. Toulouse-Lautrec's work captures the essence of Parisian nightlife and the characters that inhabited it, making "Divan Japonais" an important document of the Belle Époque era. Today, the lithograph is held in various museum collections and is considered an iconic example of Toulouse-Lautrec's contribution to graphic design and modern advertising.
