Painting Description
''Divan Japonais'' is a lithograph poster created in 1893 by the French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. It is one of his most celebrated works and exemplifies the artist's fascination with the Parisian nightlife, as well as his interest in Japanese art forms, which influenced many European artists during the late 19th century in a movement known as Japonisme. The poster was designed to promote the Parisian café-concert or nightclub called Le Divan Japonais, located on the rue des Martyrs.
The artwork features three figures: the dancer Jane Avril, a regular subject of Toulouse-Lautrec's works, is seen sitting in the audience; the writer Édouard Dujardin is depicted in the foreground; and the singer Yvette Guilbert, whose head is famously cropped out of the frame, is performing on stage. This unconventional composition, with its bold cropping and flat areas of color, reflects the influence of Japanese prints and the innovative perspectives that were being explored by avant-garde artists of the time.
Measuring 80.3 cm × 60.9 cm, ''Divan Japonais'' is characterized by its strong lines, simplified forms, and a limited but striking color palette, which were hallmarks of Toulouse-Lautrec's lithographic style. The poster is not only a significant work in the artist's oeuvre but also an important artifact of the Belle Époque era, capturing the vibrant cultural scene of fin-de-siècle Paris. Today, ''Divan Japonais'' is held in various museum collections and remains an iconic image in the history of graphic design and modern art.
