Painting Description
"Au Cirque" is a series of artworks created by the French painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in the late 19th century, focusing on the vibrant and colorful world of the circus. Toulouse-Lautrec, known for his depictions of the bohemian lifestyle in Paris, including scenes from cabarets, theaters, and brothels, turned his attention to the circus in 1899, producing a set of 39 crayon drawings that capture the behind-the-scenes moments and performances of circus acts.
This series, created during the artist's stay at the sanatorium of Neuilly-sur-Seine for alcoholism and mental health issues, represents a departure from his earlier, more raucous subject matter. The "Au Cirque" works are characterized by a sense of introspection and quietude, reflecting perhaps the artist's own state of mind during this period. The drawings are noted for their delicate lines and subtle use of color, which convey the movement and grace of the circus performers, as well as the atmosphere of the circus tent.
Toulouse-Lautrec's fascination with marginalized groups and individuals on the fringes of society is evident in this series. He portrays a range of characters, from acrobats and clowns to the audience members, with a sense of empathy and humanity. The "Au Cirque" series is considered one of the artist's most poignant works, offering insight into his artistic evolution and personal struggles.
The artworks from the "Au Cirque" series are held in various collections around the world and are regarded as important examples of post-impressionist art. They continue to be studied for their innovative approach to capturing the dynamism of performance and the complexities of human emotion.
