Painting Description
"The Parable of the Good Samaritan" is a renowned engraving by the German artist Heinrich Aldegrever, created in 1554. Aldegrever, born Heinrich Trippenmeker (1502–circa 1561), was a prominent figure of the Northern Renaissance and a contemporary of Albrecht Dürer. He was known for his fine engravings, which often depicted religious scenes, mythological subjects, and allegories, as well as for his work as a goldsmith.
The engraving illustrates the Biblical story of the Good Samaritan, as recounted in the Gospel of Luke (10:25–37). This parable, told by Jesus, describes a traveler who is stripped of clothing, beaten, and left half dead alongside the road. First a priest and then a Levite come by, but both avoid the man. Finally, a Samaritan happens upon the traveler. Samaritans and Jews generally despised each other, but the Samaritan helps the injured man, demonstrating the moral lesson of the parable that compassion should be for all people, and that it is the action, not the ethnicity or creed, which defines a neighbor.
Aldegrever's interpretation of this parable is notable for its meticulous detail and the expressive depiction of the figures, which is characteristic of his work. The engraving is part of a larger body of work that reflects the religious and social values of the time, particularly the emphasis on moral didacticism. Aldegrever's engravings were influential in disseminating Reformation ideas, due to their wide circulation and the accessibility of the visual medium.
The artwork is significant not only for its artistic merit but also for its cultural and historical context. It provides insight into the religious life of the 16th century and the role of art in promoting moral and ethical discourse. Today, "The Parable of the Good Samaritan" by Heinrich Aldegrever is appreciated both as a masterpiece of engraving and as a poignant representation of one of the New Testament's most enduring lessons on kindness and humanity.
