Painting Description
The Schedelsche Weltchronik, also known as the Nuremberg Chronicle, is an illustrated world history that was published in 1493 by the German physician, humanist, and historian Hartmann Schedel. This monumental work is one of the most important and elaborate incunabula, or books printed before 1501, and it represents a significant achievement in the history of printing and book illustration.
The Nuremberg Chronicle is renowned for its comprehensive and detailed account of world history, beginning with the creation of the world and extending to the contemporary period of the late 15th century. It is divided into seven ages, reflecting the medieval Christian worldview: from the creation to the Deluge, from the Deluge to the birth of Abraham, from Abraham to King David, from David to the Babylonian captivity, from the Babylonian captivity to the birth of Christ, from the birth of Christ to the present, and from the present to the Last Judgment.
One of the most striking features of the Nuremberg Chronicle is its extensive use of woodcut illustrations. The book contains more than 1,800 woodcuts, created by the workshop of Michael Wolgemut and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, who were prominent artists in Nuremberg. These illustrations include detailed city views, portraits of historical figures, biblical scenes, and allegorical representations, making the chronicle a visual as well as a textual record of history.
The Nuremberg Chronicle was printed in both Latin and German editions, making it accessible to a wide audience. The Latin edition was published on July 12, 1493, and the German edition followed on December 23, 1493. The book was printed by Anton Koberger, one of the most successful and prolific printers of the time, who was also the godfather of the famous artist Albrecht Dürer.
The Schedelsche Weltchronik is not only a valuable historical document but also a masterpiece of early book design and illustration. Its blend of text and image, along with its ambitious scope and meticulous production, has made it a treasured artifact of the Renaissance and a key work in the history of the printed book.
