Painting Description
The "Liber Chronicarum," commonly known as the "Nuremberg Chronicle," is an illustrated world history that was published in 1493 by the German physician, humanist, and historian Hartmann Schedel. This monumental work is one of the most significant incunabula, or books printed before 1501, and is renowned for its extensive use of woodcut illustrations. The "Liber Chronicarum" provides a comprehensive history of the world from the creation up to the contemporary period of the late 15th century, blending biblical events with classical and medieval history.
The book was published in Latin in July 1493, with a German translation following in December of the same year. The printing was executed by Anton Koberger, one of the most prominent printers of the time, in Nuremberg, a major center of the early printing industry. The work was commissioned by Sebald Schreyer and Sebastian Kammermeister, two wealthy Nuremberg merchants, who financed the project. The illustrations were created by Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, who were leading artists in Nuremberg and also mentors to the young Albrecht Dürer.
The "Liber Chronicarum" is notable for its ambitious scope and the integration of text and image. It contains over 1,800 woodcut illustrations, which include depictions of biblical scenes, historical events, and city views, many of which are among the earliest printed representations of these subjects. The book is divided into seven ages, beginning with the creation and ending with the anticipated Last Judgment, reflecting the medieval Christian worldview.
The "Liber Chronicarum" is not only a historical document but also a work of art, showcasing the craftsmanship of early printing and bookmaking. Its detailed illustrations and comprehensive narrative make it a valuable resource for understanding the medieval perspective on history and the world. Today, it remains a treasured artifact in the history of printing and a testament to the intellectual and artistic achievements of the Renaissance.
