Painting Description
The "Liber Chronicarum," commonly known as the "Nuremberg Chronicle," is an illustrated world history that was published in 1493. Authored by Hartmann Schedel, a German physician, humanist, and historian, this monumental work is one of the most significant incunabula, or books printed before 1501. The chronicle is notable for its ambitious scope, aiming to document the history of the world from the biblical creation to the contemporary period of its publication.
The "Nuremberg Chronicle" is renowned for its extensive use of woodcut illustrations, which were created by Michael Wolgemut and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, with some contributions possibly by the young Albrecht Dürer, who was an apprentice in Wolgemut's workshop at the time. These illustrations include detailed cityscapes, portraits of historical figures, and imaginative depictions of biblical and mythological events. The book is divided into seven ages, reflecting the medieval Christian worldview: from the creation to the birth of Abraham, from Abraham to King David, from David to the Babylonian captivity, from the Babylonian captivity to the birth of Christ, from the birth of Christ to the present, and a final section dealing with the end of the world and the Last Judgment.
Printed in both Latin and German editions, the "Nuremberg Chronicle" was produced in the city of Nuremberg by the printer Anton Koberger, who was one of the most successful publishers of his time. The work's comprehensive nature and its lavish illustrations made it a highly sought-after book among scholars and collectors. It provides invaluable insights into the medieval mindset, the state of geographical and historical knowledge at the time, and the early history of book printing. The "Nuremberg Chronicle" remains a key artifact in the study of early printed books and the dissemination of knowledge in the late 15th century.
