Painting Description
"Belshazzar's Feast" is a masterpiece by Harmenszoon van Rijn Rembrandt, one of the greatest visual artists in the history of art. Created in circa1635, this painting is theorized to be inspired by the biblical story, primarily the Book of Daniel, where King Belshazzar witnesses a divine hand writing his impending doom on the palace wall during a feast, a moment referred to as "the writing on the wall."
Rembrandt, with his expert command over light and shadow, transformed this story into an emotionally intense scene. The painting, measuring 167.6 cm × 209.2 cm and executed in oil on canvas, is known for its dramatic lighting, expressing the terror stricken face of the king and the shocked reaction of his courtiers as they see the glowing inscription.
Possessing vivid details and chiaroscuro technique, the painting's specific attention to the opulence of the feast - the gold and silverware, royal robes, and jewel-studded goblets - help create a stark contrast with the intimidating inscription and heighten the tension. In his unique style, Rembrandt renders the divine inscription in a mysterious script, emphasizing its unfathomable nature to the Babylonians.
Currently, "Belshazzar's Feast" finds its home in The National Gallery, London. It is considered one of the most notable contributions to Baroque art and a testament to Rembrandt's extraordinary ability to visualize narrative scenes with a poignant intensity.
