Painting Description
The Triptyck of the Family Moreel is one of the most significant works of Hans Memling, a renowned German painter of the Early Netherlandish period. The painting, dated around 1484, showcases Memling's artistic prowess, attention to detail, and ability to capture the essence of domestic and religious life of the time.
The Triptych consists of three panels, traditionally arranged with a larger central panel flanked by two smaller wings. The central panel depicts the Virgin Mary and Child, surrounded by saints and angels. These saints are considered protectors: St. Christopher and St. Maurice for Willem Moreel, and St. Barbara and St. Catherine protecting Barbara Van Vlaenderberch.
The left wing of the triptych depicts the commissioner of the work, the Bruges politician, and ship owner Willem Moreel, with his five sons behind him. The right wing features his wife, Barbara Van Vlaenderberch, accompanied by her eleven daughters. The careful representation of each figure's facial features suggests that Memling employed portraiture, a technique not often seen in religious representations.
A unique aspect of this piece is that Memling has integrated the religious narrative with the domestic life of the Moreel family, reflecting a common convention of the epoch where the sacred and the profane were often shown interacting in a single pictorial space.
The painting is currently housed at the Groeningemuseum in Bruges, Belgium, where it continues to intrigue visitors with its depiction of a late medieval family entwined with religious iconography, providing a fascinating insight into the socio-cultural milieu of the late 15th-century Bruges.
