Painting Description
Nativity 1475-1500 is a masterful painting by Hans Memling, an influential German-born painter active during the 15th century in the Early Netherlandishor Flemish) tradition. The work, presumed to be created between 1475 and 1500, depicts the biblical theme of the birth of Jesus Christ, also known as the Nat.
The painting demonstrates Memling's precise detail and mastery of light and perspective, common traits of the Early Netherlandish style. In the painting, we can observe the intimate scene of childbirth in a rustic setting, featuring the virgin Mary, baby Jesus and Joseph, accompanied by angels and observed by shepherds and the three Magi, also known as the three Kings.
The Altarpiece, in its whole triptych form, includes three separate scenes on its panels, namely: the Adoration of the Magi, the Nativity, and the Resurrection. These panels depict distinct episodes of Christ's life, with the Nativity acting as a symbolic central panel. Poetic details, like the light falling on the baby Christ, symbolize his divine existence.
Today, the Nativity 1475-1500 is held in the collection of The Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain, where it continues to be appreciated as an exceptional example of Memling's craft and the Early Netherlandish style. As of now, the painting gracefully contributes to an understanding of the evolution of religious-themed art in the early Renaissance period and bears testimony to Memling's status as a major figure in the development of Western painting.
