"Der Weiss Kunig" (The White King) is a historical allegory and chivalric romance created by the German artist and printmaker Hans Burgkmair the Elder, in collaboration with the writer and humanist Melchior Pfintzing. Commissioned by Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, the work was conceived as part of a larger project to glorify the emperor's reign and lineage. The project began around 1512 and continued until Maximilian's death in 1519, although it remained incomplete.
The narrative of "Der Weiss Kunig" is a semi-fictionalized account of Maximilian I's life, depicted through the lens of a chivalric romance. The title character, the White King, represents Maximilian himself, while other figures in the story symbolize various historical and allegorical characters from his life and times.
