Painting Description
"Paris Street; Rainy Day" (French: "Rue de Paris, temps de pluie") is a large 1877 oil painting by the French artist Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894). The painting is one of Caillebotte's most celebrated works and is known for its rich depiction of urban life in Paris during the late 19th century. It is a classic example of the realism movement, to which Caillebotte contributed significantly, although he is often associated with the Impressionists due to his close relationships with key figures in that movement and his participation in their exhibitions.
The painting measures 212.2 cm × 276.2 cm (83.5 in × 108.7 in) and is housed in the Art Institute of Chicago. Caillebotte's masterpiece captures a typical Parisian scene at the intersection of the rue de Moscou and the rue de Turin, on the rue de Saint-Pétersbourg (now rue de Stockholm), looking east towards the Place de Dublin. The work is renowned for its attention to detail, use of perspective, and the play of light on the wet pavement, which reflects the figures and Haussmann-era buildings.
"Paris Street; Rainy Day" is a prime example of Caillebotte's interest in photography and his focus on the modern urban environment. The composition's cropped edges and the way the figures intersect with the painting's frame suggest the influence of photography on his work. The figures in the painting, particularly the main couple in the foreground, are rendered with a sense of detachment and anonymity, characteristic of the transient nature of city life.
Caillebotte's method of capturing the Parisian streetscape in "Paris Street; Rainy Day" is often noted for its juxtaposition of the modernity of the city—evident in the broad, newly laid boulevards and the standardized, prefabricated Haussmann buildings—with the more timeless, universal experience of city dwellers moving through the rain. The painting's precise execution and the artist's engagement with contemporary urban subject matter make it an important document of its time and a significant work in the history of art.
The painting was first exhibited at the Third Impressionist Exhibition of 1877 and has since been recognized as a masterpiece of urban realism, capturing the essence of Parisian modern life in the late 19th century. Its acquisition by the Art Institute of Chicago has allowed the painting to be viewed and appreciated by a wide audience, contributing to Caillebotte's posthumous reputation as a major figure in the development of modern art.
