Painting Description
"Medicine" is a composition study by the renowned Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt, created as part of his commission for the ceiling paintings in the Great Hall of the University of Vienna. Painted in 1900-1907, this work was one of three paintings intended to showcase the themes of philosophy, medicine, and jurisprudence. However, the series sparked controversy due to its radical departure from traditional academic art and its exploration of complex, often unsettling themes.
The "Medicine" composition depicts Hygieia, the daughter of the god of medicine, Asclepius, and an embodiment of health and hygiene in Greek mythology. She is surrounded by a throng of nude figures representing humanity in various states of suffering and despair, symbolizing the inescapable nature of the human condition and the limitations of medicine. Klimt's use of allegory and his incorporation of the human life cycle, from birth to death, reflect his engagement with themes of existentialism and the burgeoning psychoanalytic theories of his time.
Klimt's revolutionary style, characterized by his use of gold leaf, ornamental patterns, and a flattened pictorial space, is evident in this study, though the final painting was reported to have been more muted in color. The original "Medicine" painting, along with its companion pieces, was destroyed by retreating SS forces in 1945 at Immendorf Castle, making the preliminary studies and surviving photographs crucial for understanding Klimt's artistic intentions.
The "Medicine" study, along with the public and critical reaction to the completed painting, highlights the tension between traditional academic art and the modernist movement that Klimt was a part of. It remains a significant work in the study of Klimt's oeuvre and the broader context of early 20th-century art, representing a pivotal moment in the evolution of modernist sensibilities and the role of art in challenging societal norms.
