Painting Description
"Mada Primavesi (1903-2000) is an oil painting by Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Kt, completed between 1912 and 1913 during his so-called 'golden phase'. The painting is a portrait of nine-year-old girl Margarethe (Mada) Primavesi, who was the daughter of industrialist and financier Otto Primavesi, and his wife Eugenia (née Butschek), a prominent Viennese figure. Both her parents were patrons of Klimt.
The composition of Mada Primavesi reflects Klimt's distinctive style of juxtaposing the figure against a highly decorative, pattern-filled background. The young Mada stands confidently with her hands on her hips against a vibrant field infused with floral motifs and geometric patterns, a visual representation of Klimt's interest in the decorative aesthetics influenced by the Art Nouveau, Symbolist, and Vienna Secession movements.
The painting is noted for Klimt's emphasis on Mada's presence, dynamism, and self-assuredness. With this portrait, Klimt challenged traditional child portraiture, eschewing the typical portrayal of children as innocent and demure figures, making the young Mada appear strong, dominant, and world-aware, eerily predicting her independent spirit.
Mada Primavesi now resides in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, which obtained the painting in 1982. Its timeless portrayal of adolescence, combined with Klimt's unique ornamentation and decorative style, continues to draw significant scholarly interest and public fascination."
