Painting Description
"La Giurisprudenza" (Jurisprudence) is one of the three paintings that Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt was commissioned to create for the ceiling of the Great Hall at the University of Vienna in 1894. Alongside "Philosophy" and "Medicine," this work was intended to represent one of the faculties of the university. Klimt's approach to "La Giurisprudenza" was highly allegorical and symbolic, reflecting his departure from traditional academic painting and his embrace of the Vienna Secession movement, which sought to break away from the conservative styles of the time.
Completed in 1907, "La Giurisprudenza" depicted a complex, enigmatic scene blending mythological and allegorical figures to convey the themes of law and justice. The central figure in the painting is a man ensnared by octopus-like tentacles, symbolizing the inescapable nature of law. Surrounding him are three female figures representing the Fates from Greek mythology, who weave the destiny of man, thus intertwining the concepts of fate and legality.
The painting was met with controversy and public outcry, as Klimt's radical style and the erotic undertones in his work were deemed inappropriate for an academic setting. The original paintings were never displayed in the university and were later destroyed by retreating SS forces in May 1945, during the final days of World War II, as they set fire to Immendorf Castle in Lower Austria, where the works had been moved for safekeeping.
Today, "La Giurisprudenza" is known only through preparatory sketches, a few surviving photographs, and written descriptions. Its loss is considered a significant tragedy in the art world, as it represented a critical moment in Klimt's artistic journey and a bold statement within the context of early 20th-century European art. Despite its destruction, "La Giurisprudenza" continues to be studied and admired for its innovative approach to the representation of legal and moral themes, and for its pivotal role in the development of modern art.
