Painting Description
"Aurora" is a landmark fresco created by Italian Baroque artist Guido Reni between 1613 and 1614. Situated in the Palazzo Pallavicini-Rospigliosi in Rome, the fresco covers the ceiling of the Casino dell'Aurora, named after the work itself. The "Aurora" represents the dawn goddess Aurora, also known as Eos in Greek mythology, dashing across the sky in her horse-drawn chariot, heralding the arrival of the sun.
The work is celebrated for the spiraling movement of the figures against the background of a diminishing, offering an illusion of a heavenly realm beyond the ceiling. Reni effectively employed Caravaggio's tenebrism—technique of using extreme contrasts of light and dark—a powerful element that greatly contributes to the creation of a dramatic atmosphere in the composition.
The fresco is arranged compositionally around four black and white female figures symbolizing the Times of Day. Further, mythical figures such as Apollo (God of Sun) and Aurora's aged husband, Tithonus, are depicted in the corners of the painting. Reni’s choice of color palette and his proficiency in capturing light effects in "Aurora" conveys an ethereal quality that resonates with the mythological narrative.
"Aurora" stands today as a testament to Guido Reni's skill and mastery over the Baroque style, marking a significant contribution to Italian 17th century painting.
