Painting Description
"Hummingbird by Gould, John & Richter, H.C." refers to a series of ornithological illustrations from one of the most significant works on hummingbirds, "A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-Birds" completed by John Gould, with the assistance of Henry Constantine Richter and others. The monograph, published in parts between 1849 and 1861, is a comprehensive collection of 360 hand-colored lithographs depicting various species of hummingbirds, many of which were unknown to Europeans at the time.
John Gould (1804–1881) was an English ornithologist and bird artist who is often referred to as the "British Audubon" due to his prolific work in the field of bird illustration. His contributions to ornithology and his artistic endeavors were instrumental in popularizing bird study and appreciation in the 19th century. Gould's fascination with hummingbirds began after he exhibited a number of hummingbird specimens at the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, which garnered significant public interest.
Henry Constantine Richter (1821–1902) was a talented artist who worked closely with Gould, contributing to the illustrations in many of his publications. Richter's skill in lithography and his attention to detail were crucial in bringing Gould's visions to life, capturing the iridescence and vibrancy of the hummingbirds' plumage.
"A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-Birds" is celebrated for its artistic beauty and scientific accuracy. The illustrations are noted for their vivid colors and dynamic representations of the birds in life-like poses, often including botanical elements native to the habitats of the species depicted. This work remains a valuable resource for ornithologists and bird enthusiasts, as well as a testament to the collaboration between Gould and Richter, whose combined efforts produced one of the most exquisite ornithological records of the time. The monograph not only provided significant contributions to the study of hummingbirds but also stands as a monumental achievement in the art of bird illustration.
