Painting Description
"Tarquin and Lucretia" is a notable artwork attributed to Giulio Romano, who was sometimes referred to as Orbetto. This painting is a remarkable example of Romano's affinity for dramatic narratives and his mastery in capturing intense emotions and actions.
The painting depicts the tragic story from ancient Rome in which the last Etruscan of Rome, Tarquin the Proud, raped Lucretia, a noblewoman. Romano borrowed this plot from Livy's "History of Rome." This act led to Lucretia's suicide and consequently sparked the revolution that resulted in the overthrow of the monarchy in Rome and the establishment of the Roman Republic.
Romano has effectively used his artistic skill to portray the emotional struggle and the physical tussle between Tarquin and Lucretia, thus building up an intense atmosphere. The contrast between the forceful Tarquin and the visibly distressed Lucretia injects this painting with pulsating energy, anguish, and gloom.
"Tarquin and Lucretia" is an excellent demonstration of Romano's unique style, a contribution to the Mannerist art period, and a brilliant nod to the artists under whom he apprenticed, including Raphael. Deeply impactful, this piece continues to be studied for its artistic quality and historical context. The artwork remains a significant example of Romano's oeuvre and of 16th-century Italian art more broadly.
