Painting Description
''Madonna with the Long Neck'', also known as ''Madonna and Child with Angels and St. Jerome'', is an Italian Mannerist painting completed between 1534 and 1540 by the painter Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola, better known as Parmigianino. This oil on wood panel painting, measuring 216 cm × 132 cm (85 in × 52 in), is housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. It is one of the most notable works of Parmigianino, whose style is characterized by elongation of form and a highly stylized elegance, both of which are exemplified in this piece.
The painting depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, who lies languidly on her lap, surrounded by a host of angels with one of them holding a vase, a symbol of Mary's virginity. To the right, the figure of St. Jerome is included, although unfinished, with a scroll in his hand. The Madonna's unnaturally long neck, which gives the painting its name, and her delicate, elongated fingers are typical of the Mannerist style, which sought to challenge the classical norms of Renaissance proportions and balance.
Parmigianino's work is notable for its sophisticated use of color and light, as well as its sense of movement and fluidity. The composition's asymmetry, with the large empty space to the right of the Madonna, and the crowded grouping of angels to her left, creates a sense of imbalance that was innovative for its time and reflective of the evolving Mannerist aesthetic. The elongated forms and the dreamlike quality of the figures give the painting an ethereal and otherworldly atmosphere.
''Madonna with the Long Neck'' is often analyzed for its deviation from traditional religious iconography and its embodiment of the Mannerist style's exploration of elegance and beauty. The painting's unfinished state, particularly evident in the figure of St. Jerome and the column in the background, adds to the intrigue surrounding the work and provides insight into Parmigianino's artistic process. Despite its unfinished status, the painting remains a seminal work of the Mannerist period and a testament to Parmigianino's innovative approach to composition and form.
