Painting Description
'''Madonna dal Collo Lungo''' ('''Madonna with Long Neck'''), painted between 1534 and 1540 by Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola, better known as Parmigianino, is an iconic example of Mannerist art. This oil on wood panel painting, measuring 216 cm × 132 cm (85 in × 52 in), is housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. The artwork is renowned for its elongated proportions and highly stylized figures, which reflect the Mannerist aesthetic of elegance and sophistication that deviated from the naturalism of the High Renaissance.
The painting depicts the Virgin Mary in an unconventional pose, with an exaggeratedly long neck, holding the Christ Child who appears to be in a languid pose, surrounded by a cluster of angels. The composition is notable for its asymmetry and the unusual spatial arrangement. The Virgin is seated on a high pedestal, dominating the scene, while to the right, the figure of St. Jerome is unfinished, with only a sketch of his leg visible. This unbalanced composition, along with the elongated forms and the cool, elegant color palette, contributes to the dreamlike and otherworldly atmosphere of the painting.
Parmigianino's Madonna with Long Neck is often interpreted as a deliberate challenge to the rules of proportion and perspective that had been established during the Renaissance. The painting's title itself highlights the artist's radical departure from naturalistic representation. Art historians have also noted the influence of classical sculpture and the recent works of Michelangelo on Parmigianino's style.
The work was commissioned by Elena Baiardi for the funerary chapel of the Baiardi family in the church of Santa Maria dei Servi in Parma, but it remained incomplete at the time of the artist's death in 1540. Despite its unfinished state, the Madonna with Long Neck remains a seminal work of the Mannerist period, showcasing Parmigianino's mastery of form and his innovative approach to religious iconography. Its influence can be seen in the works of later artists who sought to push the boundaries of artistic expression beyond the naturalistic ideals of the earlier Renaissance.
