Painting Description
'''Madonna dal Collo Lungo''' ('''Madonna with Long Neck'''), also known as '''Madonna and Child with Angels and St. Jerome''', is an Italian Mannerist painting completed by Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola, better known as Parmigianino, in the mid-16th century. The painting, which is an oil on wood panel, measures 216 cm × 132 cm (85 in × 52 in) and is housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy.
This enigmatic work of art is renowned for its elongated proportions and highly stylized figures, which are characteristic of the Mannerist movement that emerged towards the end of the High Renaissance. Parmigianino began the painting in 1534 for the funerary chapel of Francesco Tagliaferri in Parma, but it remained incomplete upon the artist's death in 1540.
The painting depicts the Virgin Mary seated on a high pedestal in an unconventional pose, with an exaggeratedly long neck, holding the Christ Child who lies languidly on her lap. Surrounding them are a cluster of angels, with one in particular drawing attention for her unusual posture and the way she gazes out of the canvas. To the right, a diminutive figure of St. Jerome is included, but the saint is unfinished and seems disconnected from the central group.
The composition is noted for its lack of spatial coherence, with the figures appearing to float in an undefined space, and the unusual column on the right-hand side of the painting that seems to serve no structural purpose. The elongation of the figures, the elegant, serpentine lines, and the cool, refined color palette are all hallmarks of Parmigianino's late style, which had a significant influence on later Mannerist artists.
The ''Madonna with Long Neck'' is often analyzed for its symbolic content, with various interpretations offered for its unusual elements, such as the oversized column and the Virgin's exaggerated features. The work is celebrated for its beauty and its departure from the classical norms of the Renaissance, reflecting the artist's personal vision and the broader cultural shifts of the period.
As one of Parmigianino's most famous works, the ''Madonna with Long Neck'' remains a subject of fascination for art historians and enthusiasts alike, and it continues to be studied for its aesthetic qualities and its place within the context of 16th-century Italian art.
