Painting Description
"Saints Paul and Barnabas Preaching in Lystra" is a notable engraving by the Flemish artist and engraver Philip Galle (P. Galleus), after a design by the Italian Mannerist painter Giovanni Stradano (also known as Jan van der Straet). The work depicts the biblical scene from the Acts of the Apostles (Chapter 14:8-18), where the apostles Paul and Barnabas are shown preaching to the inhabitants of Lystra, an ancient city in present-day Turkey.
In this scene, the apostles are confronted with the challenge of communicating their message to a non-Jewish audience, which results in a miraculous healing and a subsequent misunderstanding where the locals begin to worship them as gods. The engraving captures the moment of fervent evangelization, with Paul often depicted as the central figure, addressing the crowd or performing the miracle of healing a lame man, while Barnabas stands by his side.
Giovanni Stradano, a prolific artist of the late Renaissance, was known for his dynamic compositions and narrative clarity, which are evident in the original design for this engraving. Philip Galle, a master engraver, translated Stradano's design into a finely detailed print that would have been widely disseminated, contributing to the spread of biblical imagery during the Counter-Reformation.
The work is significant for its artistic merit, its role in religious and cultural dissemination during the 16th century, and its representation of a pivotal New Testament event. It exemplifies the collaborative efforts of artists during the Renaissance, where painters and engravers often worked together to produce works that combined the strengths of both mediums.
