Painting Description
"A Roman Hunt, probably in Roman North Africa, plate 10 from 'Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium. Pugnae Bestiariorum & Mutuae Bestiarum' (Of Hunting Wild Beasts, Birds, Fish. Battles of Beast-fighters & Mutual Fights of Beasts)" is a notable engraving by Jan Collaert (1566–1628), after a design by the Flemish artist Giovanni Stradano (also known as Jan van der Straet, 1523–1605). The work was published by Phillipus Gallaeus (Philip Galle) in Amsterdam and forms part of a series that illustrates various forms of hunting and animal combats that were popular in ancient Rome.
This particular plate, the tenth in the series, depicts a dynamic and detailed scene of a hunt, which is suggested to take place in Roman North Africa due to the landscape and attire of the figures. The series as a whole is a significant example of Northern Mannerist printmaking and reflects the 16th-century European fascination with classical antiquity and exoticism. It showcases Stradano's skill in composition and his ability to convey movement and drama, as well as Collaert's mastery in the art of engraving, translating the original design into a finely detailed print.
The 'Venationes' series was influential in disseminating images of the ancient world and contributed to the Renaissance understanding of Roman spectacles. The prints were collected and admired for their artistic merit as well as their educational value, providing a visual representation of historical texts that described such events. The series remains an important historical document for the study of cultural and artistic exchanges between Italy and the Low Countries during the late Renaissance period.
