Painting Description
"The Miracle of Soriano" is a notable 1655 artwork by Italian artist Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione. The portrays the miracle that is believed to have occurred at the Franciscan hermitage of Soriano nel Cimino in Italy. The Franciscans hold that in 1535, the Virgin Mary and Saints Francis and Anthony appeared before a lay brother. They handed him a scroll which had an illustration of St. Nicholas of Tolentino, the Augustinian hermit. The image is said to have subsequently become a source of miracles.
In Castiglione's interpretation of the event, dynamic action, dramatic lighting, and forceful gestures are utilized to powerfully convey the miraculous event. The fluidity of strokes and bold chiaroscuro embody the artist's expertise in Genoese painting and his significant contribution to Baroque art.
The painting reflects Castiglione's interests in light and shadow manipulation, revealing the influence of artists such as Rembrandt whom he may have encountered during his travels in Rome. Notably, in the work, Castiglione combines etching and printmaking techniques, a practice he was widely recognized for in his career.
"The Miracle of Soriano" remains a significant art piece in understanding the artist's style evolution and the wider context of Italian art during the 17th century Baroque period.
