Painting Description
Dead Christ Supported by Mary and Saint John the Evangelist a religious artwork completed by the Venetian artist, Giovanni Bellini, in the late 15th century, circa 1465-1470. This artwork manifests the creative talent of Bellini in the early stages of his career and represents one of the themes that were prominent in the religious context of the period – the mourning of Jesus Christ.
The painting measures 74 cm in height and 50 cm in breadth, and it was executed in tempera on panel. The artwork magnificently portrays the scene of a grieving Mary and Saint John the Evangelist supporting the limp body of Christ after the crucifixion. With the sea against a dark sky as the background, the painting largely differs from the traditional presentations due to Bellini’s emphasis on the details and ambience rather than the narrative of the scene.
Stylistically, the painting draws on the hallmark attributes of Bellini’s unique approach merged with the influences of his brother-in-law, the renowned artist Andrea Mantegna. The anatomical precision in Christ's body, the expressions of grief on the faces of Mary, and Saint John the Evangelist show Bellini's personal evolution as an artist who was at the cusp of moving from the Byzantine style to the Early Renaissance.
Currently housed in Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan, The Dead Christ Supported by Mary and Saint John the Evangelist illustrates not only the religious fervor of its era but also the sophistication and progressiveness of Bellini's artistic mastery. Bellini made a significant contribution to the development of the Venetian art, and this artwork serves as a symbolic display of his expertise to build scenes with a strong emotional impact.
