Painting Description
"No. 37 Scenes from the Life of Christ: 21. Resurrection (Noli me tangere)" is a fresco by the Italian master Giotto di Bondone, painted between 1304 and 1306. This work is part of a series of frescoes that adorn the walls of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, Italy, which is considered one of the most important masterpieces of Western art. Giotto's frescoes in the chapel mark a significant departure from the Byzantine style prevalent in Italian painting and are celebrated for their innovative approach to space, narrative, and human emotion.
The fresco depicts the moment from the Christian New Testament when Mary Magdalene first sees the resurrected Jesus and reaches out to touch him, only to be told "Noli me tangere" (Latin for "Touch me not" or "Do not cling to me"), as described in the Gospel of John (20:17). Giotto's interpretation of this scene is noted for its emotional depth and the use of chiaroscuro to model the figures in a more naturalistic manner. The artist's ability to convey complex psychological states through gesture and expression is evident in the interaction between the two central figures.
Giotto's frescoes, including the "Resurrection (Noli me tangere)," were revolutionary in their depiction of three-dimensional space and the use of perspective, which would later become a hallmark of Renaissance art. The fresco is also significant for its landscape elements, which show a departure from the gold backgrounds of Byzantine art, towards more realistic depictions of the natural world.
The Scrovegni Chapel, also known as the Arena Chapel, was commissioned by the wealthy banker Enrico Scrovegni and is named after the ancient Roman arena upon which it was built. Giotto's cycle of frescoes covers the entire interior of the chapel and is organized into thematic tiers that narrate the life of the Virgin Mary, the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, and the Passion and Resurrection.
The "Resurrection (Noli me tangere)" is a key component of this cycle and is celebrated for its artistic significance and contribution to the development of Western art. The fresco has been the subject of extensive art historical research and has been preserved as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the city of Padua's 14th-century fresco cycles, which were inscribed in 2021.
