Painting Description
The "Navicella" (1305-1313) is a renowned mosaic originally created by the Italian painter Giotto di Bondone for the porch of the old St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The term "navicella" means "little ship" in Italian, which is a reference to the work's depiction of the biblical scene where the Apostle Peter walks on water towards Jesus Christ. This mosaic is significant in art history as it represents a pivotal moment in the transition from medieval to Renaissance art, showcasing Giotto's innovative approach to naturalism and spatial depth.
Commissioned by Cardinal Jacopo Stefaneschi, the "Navicella" was part of a larger decorative program for the basilica. Giotto's original mosaic was a large, nearly square composition, approximately 4 meters on each side, and was renowned for its use of perspective and the lifelike quality of the figures, which demonstrated a break from the stylized Byzantine tradition that had dominated European art for centuries.
Unfortunately, the original mosaic has not survived in its entirety. It was extensively restored and moved in the 17th century by mosaicist Domenico Paradisi during the construction of the new St. Peter's Basilica. The "Navicella" underwent further alterations and restorations over the centuries, which significantly changed its appearance and composition. Today, only fragments of Giotto's original work remain, and the mosaic that can be seen in the Vatican is largely a recreation based on the 17th-century restoration.
Despite the alterations, the "Navicella" remains an important work in Giotto's oeuvre and in the history of Western art. It is often cited as an example of Giotto's skill in rendering narrative and emotion, as well as his ability to create convincing space and volume in figures, which would influence generations of artists to come. The mosaic's historical and artistic significance continues to be a subject of study among art historians and scholars.
