Painting Description
"Navicella" (1305-1313) is a renowned mosaic by the Italian painter and architect Giotto di Bondone, commonly known as Giotto. This mosaic was originally created for the porch of the old St. Peter's Basilica in Rome at the commission of Cardinal Jacopo Stefaneschi. The term "Navicella" means "little ship" in Italian, and the mosaic depicted a scene of Christ walking on water, inviting Peter to join him, thus symbolizing the ship of the Church navigating through the tumultuous sea of the world, with Christ guiding it.
The "Navicella" was highly praised for its artistic innovation and its departure from the Byzantine style that dominated religious art of the period. Giotto's work was groundbreaking in its use of perspective and volume, bringing a sense of realism and humanity to the figures that had not been seen before. The mosaic was a testament to Giotto's mastery of narrative and emotion, as well as his ability to create a sense of space and depth on a flat surface.
Unfortunately, the original mosaic has not survived in its entirety. It underwent numerous restorations and alterations over the centuries, particularly during the 17th century when it was moved to the nave of the new St. Peter's Basilica and significantly reworked by mosaicist Domenico Paradisi under the direction of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. As a result, much of Giotto's original work was lost, and what remains today is a heavily restored and reinterpreted version of the original composition.
Despite these changes, the "Navicella" remains an important piece in the study of Giotto's work and the development of early Renaissance art. It is considered a pivotal work that bridges the gap between the medieval and Renaissance periods, reflecting the shift towards a more naturalistic and human-centered approach to art. The mosaic is still on display in the Vatican, offering visitors a glimpse into the artistic legacy of one of Italy's most influential pre-Renaissance painters.
