Painting Description
"Legend of St Francis- 4. Miracle of the Crucifix" is a fresco by the Italian artist Giotto di Bondone, painted between 1297 and 1299. It is part of a series of 28 frescoes depicting the life of St Francis of Assisi, located in the Upper Church of the Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi in Assisi, Italy. This particular fresco, the fourth in the sequence, illustrates a miraculous event from the early life of St Francis.
The scene captures the moment when St Francis, praying before an ancient crucifix at the dilapidated church of San Damiano, receives a divine commission. According to Franciscan tradition, the crucifix miraculously spoke to Francis, urging him to "repair my church, which is falling into ruins." This pivotal experience inspired Francis to renounce his worldly life and devote himself to a life of poverty and piety, ultimately leading to the founding of the Franciscan Order.
Giotto's portrayal is noted for its dramatic intensity and emotional depth, characteristics that mark the departure from the Byzantine style prevalent in Italian painting prior to the 13th century. The fresco is celebrated for its innovative use of chiaroscuro and realistic depiction of human expressions and emotions, which would later influence the development of Renaissance art. Giotto's work in the Basilica of San Francesco is considered one of his masterpieces, showcasing his skill in narrative storytelling through visual art.
