Painting Description
"Legend of St. Francis - 10. Exorcism of the Demons at Arezzo" is one of the 28 frescoes by Giotto di Bondone, painted between 1297 and 1299, that adorn the walls of the Upper Church of the Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi. This particular fresco, which is the tenth scene in the series, depicts a moment from the life of St. Francis of Assisi, in which the saint performs an exorcism to rid the city of Arezzo of demons that have sown discord and violence among its inhabitants.
The fresco series as a whole is considered a masterpiece of the early Italian Renaissance and a seminal work in the development of European painting. Giotto's innovative approach to composition, use of space, and depiction of human emotion marked a departure from the stylized figures and flat backgrounds characteristic of Byzantine art, setting the stage for more naturalistic styles.
In "Exorcism of the Demons at Arezzo," Giotto illustrates the dramatic encounter with a narrative clarity and emotional intensity that were revolutionary for the time. The scene is set within an architectural framework that lends depth to the composition, while the figures are rendered with a solidity and volume that suggest a new understanding of the human body and its movement in space.
The fresco captures the moment when St. Francis, accompanied by Brother Sylvester, confronts the demons. According to the legend, St. Francis instructed Brother Sylvester to command the demons to leave Arezzo in the name of God. The demons, visualized as black figures, are shown fleeing from the saint's holy presence. The townspeople, who are depicted in various states of reaction, bear witness to the miracle.
This work is part of a larger narrative cycle that illustrates the life of St. Francis based on the hagiographic text "Legenda Maior" by St. Bonaventure and other sources. The cycle serves both as a devotional aid and as a visual account of St. Francis's deeds for the edification of the faithful. Giotto's frescoes in the Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi are considered some of the artist's greatest achievements and are a key attraction for visitors to the Umbrian town.
The "Exorcism of the Demons at Arezzo" stands as a testament to Giotto's ability to convey complex theological ideas through art. It remains an important work for the study of medieval art, the Franciscan Order, and the history of religious iconography.
