Painting Description
"Washington" by Gilbert Stuart is one of the most iconic portraits of George Washington, the first President of the United States. Painted by the American artist Gilbert Stuart in 1796, this oil-on-canvas work is also known as the Lansdowne Portrait because it was commissioned by Senator William Bingham of Pennsylvania as a gift for William Petty, the 1st Marquess of Lansdowne and a British supporter of American independence.
The portrait depicts Washington at 64 years of age, standing in a stately pose in a grand setting that conveys his importance and the dignity of the presidential office. Washington is shown wearing a black velvet suit with white ruffles, his right arm is extended, and his left arm rests on a table beside him. The table holds quill, inkwell, and several books, symbolizing the president's role in the creation of the United States. Behind him, two books are visible with titles "American Revolution" and "Constitution and Laws of the United States," further emphasizing his pivotal role in the nation's founding.
The Lansdowne Portrait is celebrated for its artistry and for its historical significance. Stuart's work captures the strength and character of Washington, and the painting has become a defining image of the president, reproduced countless times. The original painting measures approximately 8 feet by 5 feet and is part of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery's collection in Washington, D.C. It is one of several portraits Stuart painted of Washington; his unfinished Athenaeum Portrait is also famous for being the basis of Washington's image on the one-dollar bill.
Gilbert Stuart's Washington is not only a masterpiece of American portraiture but also a symbol of the American presidency and the nation's early history. Its enduring legacy is a testament to Stuart's skill as a portraitist and the lasting impact of George Washington's leadership.
