Painting Description
"The Rape of Proserpina" (Italian: "Ratto di Proserpina") is a renowned Baroque sculpture by the Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini, executed between 1621 and 1622. Also known as "Pluto and Proserpina," the work depicts the abduction of Proserpina by Pluto, the god of the underworld, a mythological event narrated in Ovid's "Metamorphoses." The sculpture is currently housed in the Galleria Borghese in Rome.
Bernini was commissioned to create the piece by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, an avid patron of the arts and a member of the powerful Borghese family. At the time of its creation, Bernini was in his early twenties and already demonstrating the virtuosity that would define his career. "The Rape of Proserpina" is a prime example of Bernini's ability to imbue marble with a sense of dynamic movement and emotional intensity.
The sculpture stands approximately 225 cm (89 in) tall and is crafted from Carrara marble. It portrays the moment when Pluto, having fallen in love with Proserpina, seizes her and drags her to his realm, despite her resistance. Bernini's attention to detail is evident in the lifelike textures, from the tears on Proserpina's face to the flesh of her thigh compressed by Pluto's hand, demonstrating his mastery of depicting human anatomy and complex emotions.
The work is celebrated for its technical prowess and its embodiment of the Baroque aesthetic, which emphasizes drama, tension, and the interplay of light and shadow. "The Rape of Proserpina" is not only a testament to Bernini's skill as a sculptor but also a reflection of the cultural and artistic vibrancy of 17th-century Rome. It remains a significant work in the history of art, illustrating the power of sculpture to capture and convey the intensity of human experience and mythological narrative.
