Painting Description
"St. Longinus" is a monumental sculpture created by the preeminent Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Commissioned by Pope Urban VIII, the sculpture was executed between 1629 and 1638 as one of four statues of the set that adorn the piers of the crossing of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. The statue is situated directly beneath the great dome designed by Michelangelo, and it is part of a group that includes works by other prominent Baroque sculptors depicting saints associated with the relics enshrined in the basilica.
The subject of the sculpture, St. Longinus, is the traditional name given to the unnamed Roman soldier who pierced the side of Jesus with a lance, the "Holy Lance," during the Crucifixion. According to Christian tradition, upon witnessing the events of the Crucifixion and the subsequent miracles, Longinus is said to have converted to Christianity. Bernini's depiction of St. Longinus captures the moment of the soldier's spiritual awakening and conversion, as he is shown in a dynamic pose with an expression of awe and revelation.
Bernini's St. Longinus is a masterful example of Baroque sculpture, characterized by its dramatic use of space, movement, and theatricality. The figure is clothed in a deeply carved drapery that enhances the sense of motion, and the composition is designed to interact with the surrounding architecture and light. The sculpture stands approximately 4.5 meters (15 feet) in height, showcasing Bernini's skill in working on a grand scale and his ability to convey intense emotion and spiritual fervor through marble.
The commission of St. Longinus offered Bernini the opportunity to contribute to the grandeur of St. Peter's Basilica, and the work reflects his mature style. It is a significant piece in the context of Bernini's oeuvre and the Baroque period, demonstrating the artist's innovative approach to sculptural design and his profound impact on the visual arts. St. Longinus remains a celebrated example of Bernini's genius and a treasured piece of the rich artistic heritage housed within the Vatican.
