Painting Description
'''Fountain of the Moor''' (Italian: ''Fontana del Moro'') is a sculptural fountain located in Piazza Navona in Rome, Italy, and is one of the three prominent fountains that adorn the elongated public square. Designed by the Italian architect and sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the fountain was commissioned by Pope Gregory XV and completed in 1654. The central figure of the fountain, the Moor, was sculpted by Bernini himself, while the surrounding tritons and other decorative elements were the work of his collaborators under his direction.
The Fountain of the Moor is situated at the southern end of Piazza Navona, directly opposite the Fountain of the Four Rivers (''Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi''), which is also a creation of Bernini. The Moor is depicted standing in a large conch shell, wrestling with a dolphin, surrounded by four Tritons. The design of the fountain is emblematic of the Baroque style, characterized by dynamic movement, dramatic contrasts, and a theatrical sense of presentation that was typical of Bernini's work.
Originally, the fountain was designed by Giacomo della Porta in 1575 with the dolphin and four Tritons. Bernini's contribution was the addition of the central figure, which gave the fountain its name. The figure of the Moor is a robust and muscular male figure, which adds to the dramatic effect and the visual narrative of man's interaction with the forces of nature.
The Fountain of the Moor, along with the other fountains in Piazza Navona, is not only a testament to the artistic genius of Gian Lorenzo Bernini but also reflects the grandeur of Baroque Rome. It continues to be a significant cultural and historical landmark, drawing tourists and art enthusiasts from around the world. The fountain has undergone several restorations to preserve its intricate details and artistic significance for future generations.
