Painting Description
"Angel with the Superscription" is a renowned sculpture by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, a master of the Italian Baroque period. This work is part of a series of ten angel sculptures known as the "Angels of the Ponte Sant'Angelo," created for the Ponte Sant'Angelo bridge in Rome, leading to the Castel Sant'Angelo. Commissioned by Pope Clement IX in the mid-17th century, each angel was designed to hold an instrument of the Passion of Christ, with Bernini's own contributions being among the most celebrated.
The "Angel with the Superscription" specifically carries the inscription "INRI," which stands for "Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum," translating to "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews." This phrase, according to the New Testament, was inscribed on the cross above Jesus during the Crucifixion. Bernini's sculpture captures the angel in a moment of serene grace, holding the inscription aloft. The work is noted for its dynamic movement and the delicate play of drapery that showcases Bernini's skill in rendering marble to appear as soft and pliable as fabric.
Bernini's initial intention was to personally sculpt all the angels for the bridge, but eventually, the task was divided among several artists, with Bernini's workshop producing designs for the others to follow. Despite this, "Angel with the Superscription" and its companion piece, "Angel with the Crown of Thorns," both directly sculpted by Bernini, stand out for their artistic mastery and emotional depth. These sculptures not only serve as a testament to Bernini's genius but also as a spiritual passage for pilgrims approaching the Vatican.
Today, the original sculptures by Bernini, including the "Angel with the Superscription," are preserved in the Church of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte in Rome, with replicas standing on the bridge. This relocation was done to protect the originals from damage and to maintain their artistic integrity. The "Angel with the Superscription" remains a significant example of Baroque sculpture, reflecting Bernini's ability to combine spiritual themes with unparalleled artistic skill, making it a focal point of study for art historians and a cherished masterpiece for visitors from around the world.
