Painting Description
"Angel with the Inscription of I.N.R.I." is a renowned sculpture created by the eminent Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini, a leading figure of the Baroque period. This sculpture is part of a series of ten angelic figures that Bernini and his followers sculpted for the Ponte Sant'Angelo, the bridge leading to the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome. Each angel holds an instrument of the Passion of Christ, with Bernini's "Angel with the Inscription of I.N.R.I." specifically carrying the inscription that was placed above Christ's head during the crucifixion, which stands for "Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum" (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews).
Commissioned by Pope Clement IX in the mid-17th century, the sculptures were intended to adorn the newly restored bridge and serve as a symbolic passage for pilgrims heading to St. Peter's Basilica. Bernini personally crafted only two of the angels, entrusting the rest to his pupils based on his designs. The "Angel with the Inscription of I.N.R.I." is particularly noted for its dynamic movement and the delicate rendering of the angel's garments and wings, which are characteristic of Bernini's masterful handling of marble to convey softness and fluidity.
The angel's expressive face and the graceful posture contribute to the sculpture's emotional impact, capturing the solemnity and reverence appropriate for the representation of a religious icon. The work's high level of craftsmanship and its integration into the architectural context of the Ponte Sant'Angelo exemplify Bernini's genius in combining sculpture, architecture, and urban planning to create a cohesive and spiritually moving experience.
Today, the original sculpture by Bernini is housed in the church of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte in Rome for preservation, while a replica stands on the bridge in its place. "Angel with the Inscription of I.N.R.I." remains a significant example of Baroque art and a testament to Bernini's enduring influence on the visual arts.
