"Olindo and Sophronia" is a painting by the Italian Baroque artist Giacinto Gimignani, created in the 17th century. The artwork is inspired by a narrative from Torquato Tasso's epic poem "Gerusalemme Liberata" ("Jerusalem Delivered"), which was first published in 1581. The poem recounts the story of the First Crusade and the Christian knights' battle to capture Jerusalem. Within this epic, the tale of Olindo and Sophronia emerges as a subplot that exemplifies themes of love, sacrifice, and faith.
The painting depicts the dramatic moment when the two young lovers, Olindo and Sophronia, are condemned to be burned at the stake by the people of Jerusalem, who mistakenly believe Sophronia to be responsible for the theft of an image of the Virgin Mary. In a selfless act to save her beloved Olindo, who is initially accused, Sophronia confesses to the crime she did not commit. However, as the flames are about to consume them, the couple is miraculously saved by the intervention of the warrior-maiden Clorinda, a character also from Tasso's poem.
