Painting Description
Henry VII (1457-1509) was the King of England from 1485 until his death in 1509. He was the founder of the Tudor dynasty, which would rule England for over a century. Born on January 28, 1457, at Pembroke Castle in Wales, Henry was the son of Edmund Tudor, 1st Earl of Richmond, and Lady Margaret Beaufort. His claim to the throne was tenuous, being derived from his mother, who was a descendant of John of Gaunt, the third son of King Edward III. Despite this weak claim, Henry's ascent to the throne marked the end of the Wars of the Roses, a series of dynastic conflicts between the houses of Lancaster and York.
Henry VII's reign began following his victory at the Battle of Bosworth Field on August 22, 1485, where he defeated King Richard III. This battle effectively ended the Wars of the Roses and established Henry as the new monarch. His marriage to Elizabeth of York, the daughter of Edward IV, in January 1486, symbolically united the warring houses of Lancaster and York, further solidifying his claim to the throne and bringing a measure of peace to the kingdom.
Henry VII is often credited with restoring stability to England after years of civil war. He strengthened the monarchy by curbing the power of the nobility, improving the administration of justice, and enhancing the financial health of the kingdom. His establishment of the Court of Star Chamber and his use of bonds and recognizances to control the nobility were significant in consolidating royal authority.
The portrait of Henry VII in the Royal Collection, engraved by George Vertue, is a significant artistic representation of the monarch. George Vertue (1684-1756) was a notable English engraver and antiquary, renowned for his detailed and accurate engravings of historical figures. Vertue's engraving of Henry VII captures the king's likeness and serves as an important visual document of his appearance and regal bearing. The portrait is part of a larger collection that aims to preserve and celebrate the history and heritage of the British monarchy.
Henry VII's legacy is marked by his efforts to strengthen the monarchy, his establishment of a lasting dynasty, and his role in ending the Wars of the Roses. His reign laid the foundations for the future successes of the Tudor dynasty, including the reigns of his son, Henry VIII, and his granddaughter, Elizabeth I. Henry VII died on April 21, 1509, and was succeeded by his son, Henry VIII.
