Painting Description
Henry II (1133-1189) was King of England from 1154 until his death in 1189. He was a pivotal figure in the development of the English monarchy and the establishment of the Angevin Empire, which at its height included not only England but also large parts of France, including Normandy, Anjou, and Aquitaine. Born to Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Anjou, and Empress Matilda, daughter of King Henry I of England, Henry II ascended to the throne following a period of civil war known as The Anarchy, which ensued after the death of his grandfather, Henry I.
Henry II's reign was marked by significant legal and administrative reforms that laid the groundwork for the English common law system. His efforts to curb the power of the nobility and the church led to conflicts, most notably with Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, whose murder in 1170 caused a significant scandal and led to Becket's martyrdom and subsequent canonization.
The effigy on Henry II's monument at Fontevraud Abbey in Anjou, where he was buried, is an important historical artifact. This effigy was engraved by the artist George Vertue, a noted 18th-century engraver and antiquary. Vertue's work is renowned for its detailed and accurate representation of historical figures and monuments, contributing significantly to the visual documentation of British history. The effigy itself depicts Henry II in regal attire, symbolizing his status and authority as a monarch. Fontevraud Abbey, the burial site, was a significant religious and cultural center during the medieval period, and it also houses the tombs of Henry's wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and their son, Richard the Lionheart.
Henry II's legacy is complex, characterized by his efforts to strengthen royal authority and his tumultuous relationships with his family and the church. His reign set the stage for the future development of the English state and its legal institutions, making him a key figure in medieval European history.
