Painting Description
"Solomon Eagle" is an etching by the British artist George Cruikshank, created in 1831. The work is part of a series of illustrations for the novel "Old Saint Paul's: A Tale of the Plague and the Fire" by William Harrison Ainsworth, which was serialized in 1841. The etching depicts a historical figure, Solomon Eagle, an apocalyptic prophet who is said to have roamed the streets of London during the Great Plague of 1665, exhorting people to repentance.
In Cruikshank's depiction, Solomon Eagle is shown as a gaunt, almost skeletal figure, wearing little more than a loincloth and a pan of burning coals on his head, as he was often described in contemporary accounts. He carries a banner or placard proclaiming the doom of the city, and his wild, unkempt appearance and fervent expression capture the hysteria and despair of the plague-ridden metropolis.
George Cruikshank (1792–1878) was one of the most prominent British caricaturists and book illustrators of the 19th century, known for his social and political satire as well as for his illustrations for the works of Charles Dickens and other authors of the time. "Solomon Eagle" is a prime example of Cruikshank's skill in capturing the essence of a character and the mood of an era, blending historical detail with a dramatic and emotive portrayal.
The etching is significant not only as a work of art but also as a historical representation of the mood in London during one of its most catastrophic periods. It reflects the fear and religious fervor that gripped the city as it faced the twin disasters of plague and fire. As such, "Solomon Eagle" is an important cultural artifact that offers insight into the public consciousness of the time and the ways in which artists like Cruikshank engaged with contemporary events and literature.
