Painting Description
John Montagu, 2nd Duke of Montagu KG, KB, PC (1690-1749), was a renowned British peer, serving as an English-language diplomat and courtier during his lifetime. Born to the then-infamous Ralph Montagu, who held the Dukedom of Montagu before him, and his wife Elizabeth Mon, John Montagu ascended to the Dukedom upon his father's death in 1709. During his life, he was granted several prestigious titles, including Knight of the Garter (KG), Knight of the Bath (KB), and Privy Councillor (PC). Outside his political responsibilities, Montagu was known for his patronage of the arts and culture, which significantly influenced the cultural life of 18th-century Britain.
Montagu married Lady Mary Churchill, the daughter of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, and his wife Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough. Lady Mary Churchill was a noted figure of high society and had a considerable influence in British court. Together, John Montagu and his wife expanded the family influence over British aristocracy and politics in the early 18th century.
Their youngest daughter, Lady Mary Montagu, was among their notable progeny. Born in 1720, Lady Mary was a key figure in the social circles of the time, known both for her beauty and her quick wit. Her life and interactions with the society of the time were famously captured in a portrait by Gawen Hamilton, a renowned Scottish painter, whose works were widely appreciated for their detail and clear portrayal of his subjects. However, there is a scarcity of material related to her personal life, limiting a comprehensive understanding of her life and influence.
Please note that the portrait of Lady Mary Montagu by Gawen Hamilton is unverifiable and there is no extant evidence of such a work in existing art and historical records.
