Painting Description
Hagia Sophia Plate 19, titled "Exterior View of the Mosque," is a significant lithograph by Gaspard Fossati, a Swiss-Italian architect and painter known for his detailed depictions of architectural wonders. This artwork is part of a series produced during Fossati's commission in 1847-1849 to oversee the restoration of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey, under the Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid I. The Hagia Sophia, originally constructed as a Christian cathedral in 537 under the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, was converted into a mosque in 1453 following the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople. It served as a mosque until 1935, when it was secularized and turned into a museum by the Republic of Turkey. In 2020, it was reconverted into a mosque.
Gaspard Fossati's lithograph captures the grandeur and architectural complexity of the Hagia Sophia, emphasizing its status as a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture and its significance as a cultural and religious symbol through centuries of change. The artwork showcases the exterior of the Hagia Sophia, highlighting its massive dome, supported by pendentives and buttressed by minarets added during the Ottoman period, which blend the architectural elements of Byzantine and Islamic traditions.
Fossati's work on the Hagia Sophia, including Plate 19, is crucial for historical and architectural studies, offering insights into the structure's condition and appearance in the mid-19th century. These lithographs not only serve as valuable historical documents but also as artistic interpretations that reflect the cultural and historical context of the period. Gaspard Fossati's attention to detail and his ability to capture the essence of the Hagia Sophia have made his lithographs, especially "Exterior View of the Mosque," celebrated works in the field of architectural art and history.
