Painting Description
The Ingeborg Psalter is a notable example of French Gothic manuscript illumination, created in the early 13th century, around 1195 to 1210. This illuminated psalter, named after its presumed owner, Ingeborg of Denmark, Queen consort of France, is a collection of Psalms accompanied by a rich program of full-page miniatures, historiated initials, and marginal decorations. The manuscript is significant for its artistic quality, iconography, and historical context, reflecting the sophisticated court art of the period and the devotional practices of the medieval Christian elite.
The Ingeborg Psalter was likely produced in the scriptorium of the Abbey of Saint-Aignan in Orléans, France, a center known for its high-quality manuscript production. The psalter contains 51 full-page miniatures, each preceding one of the 150 Psalms, and is characterized by its elegant and expressive figures, intricate use of color, and gold leaf, which exemplify the transition from Romanesque to Gothic styles. The miniatures are notable for their narrative quality, depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments as well as the lives of saints, thereby providing a visual counterpart to the text of the Psalms.
The manuscript's association with Ingeborg of Denmark, who was married to King Philip II of France, adds to its historical intrigue. Ingeborg's troubled marriage, marked by Philip's attempt to repudiate her, and her subsequent decades of virtual imprisonment, make the psalter a poignant artifact of her personal devotion and resilience.
The Ingeborg Psalter is housed in the Musée Condé, Chantilly, France, as part of the collection of the Duke of Aumale. It is an important cultural artifact that offers insight into the religious life, artistic trends, and courtly culture of the High Middle Ages in France. Its preservation and study continue to contribute to the understanding of medieval art and the broader historical narrative of the period.
