Painting Description
The Statue of Liberty, a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, was designed by the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated on October 28, 1886. The statue, a gift from the people of France to the United States, commemorates the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence and symbolizes freedom and democracy. Bartholdi's vision for the statue was inspired by the Roman goddess Libertas, who personified liberty and freedom. The figure holds a torch above her head with her right hand, and in her left hand carries a tabula ansata inscribed with the date of the American Declaration of Independence, "JULY IV MDCCLXXVI" (July 4, 1776).
The statue stands at a total height of 305 feet (93 meters) from the ground to the tip of the torch, including its pedestal. The copper-clad statue itself is 151 feet (46 meters) tall. Gustave Eiffel, the renowned engineer who later designed the Eiffel Tower, was responsible for the statue's iron framework, which allows the copper skin to move independently yet stand upright. The internal structure was a pioneering design that has influenced the construction of many subsequent large-scale sculptures.
The Statue of Liberty has become an enduring symbol of freedom and democracy, as well as a welcoming sight to immigrants arriving from abroad. It was designated as a National Monument in 1924 and underwent a significant restoration for its centennial celebration in 1986. The statue is not only a significant piece of art but also a cultural icon, representing hope, freedom, and the enduring friendship between France and the United States. Visitors to Liberty Island can explore the statue's history through the museum located in its pedestal, which houses exhibits about the statue's construction, symbolism, and legacy.
