Painting Description
The Statue of Liberty, officially titled "Liberty Enlightening the World," is a colossal neoclassical sculpture located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, New York City. Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated on October 28, 1886, the statue was a gift from the people of France to the United States to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence and to celebrate the enduring friendship between the two nations.
The statue stands at a total height of 305 feet (93 meters) from the ground to the tip of the torch, including its pedestal. The figure itself is 151 feet (46 meters) tall. Constructed of copper sheets assembled over a framework of steel supports, the statue was engineered by Gustave Eiffel, who is best known for designing the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The internal structure allows the statue to withstand strong winds and other environmental factors.
Lady Liberty, as the statue is colloquially known, depicts a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom. She holds a torch aloft in her right hand, symbolizing enlightenment, and carries a tabula ansata in her left hand inscribed with the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. At her feet lie broken chains, signifying the abolition of slavery and the triumph of freedom over oppression.
The Statue of Liberty has become an enduring symbol of freedom and democracy, as well as an iconic representation of the United States. It has welcomed millions of immigrants arriving by sea and continues to be a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world. The statue was designated a National Monument in 1924 and underwent significant restoration for its centennial celebration in 1986. Today, it remains a powerful emblem of hope and liberty, inspiring people globally.
