Painting Description
"The Meagre Company" (1633-37) is a renowned group portrait painted by the Dutch Golden Age artist Frans Hals, in collaboration with Pieter Codde. This masterpiece is part of a series of civic guard portraits that were commissioned to adorn the banquet hall of the Kloveniersdoelen, the musketeer branch of the Amsterdam civic militia's headquarters. The painting stands out in Hals's oeuvre for its lively depiction of the officers and its departure from the static formality typical of group portraits from this period.
The work is officially titled "Officers of the St. George Militia Company in 1639" but is more commonly known as "The Meagre Company" due to the slender appearance of its figures, a stark contrast to the more robust physiques traditionally depicted in militia portraits. This nickname also subtly reflects on the transitional period in Dutch society and art, moving away from the opulence of the early 17th century towards a more austere aesthetic.
Spanning approximately four years in its creation, the painting's completion was a collaborative effort due to Hals's inability to finish the commission on his own. Pieter Codde, another prominent artist of the time, was called upon to complete the work. This collaboration is evident in the stylistic differences within the painting, showcasing Hals's vigorous brushwork and Codde's meticulous attention to detail.
"The Meagre Company" is significant not only for its artistic merit but also for its historical context. It captures a moment in the life of the Amsterdam civic militia, reflecting the social and political atmosphere of the Dutch Republic during the 17th century. The painting's composition, with its figures arranged in a more dynamic and less formal manner than was typical for group portraits of the time, exemplifies Hals's innovative approach to portraiture, which influenced the development of group portraiture in the Netherlands.
Today, "The Meagre Company" is housed in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, where it continues to be celebrated for its artistic excellence and historical significance. It remains a pivotal work in the study of Dutch Golden Age painting, offering insights into the era's social structures, artistic collaborations, and evolving aesthetic preferences.
