Painting Description
Charles Gordon-Lennox, 5th Duke of Richmond (1791–1860), was a prominent British peer and politician, known for his influential role in 19th-century British society. Born on August 3, 1791, he was the eldest son of Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond, and Lady Charlotte Gordon. Educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Dublin, he succeeded his father as Duke of Richmond in 1819, inheriting not only the title but also extensive estates and a significant political legacy.
Richmond's political career was marked by his staunch Tory principles. He served as Member of Parliament for Chichester from 1812 to 1819, before transitioning to the House of Lords upon his father's death. He held several key positions, including Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1830 to 1833, where he was noted for his efforts to maintain order during a period of significant social unrest. Richmond was also a fervent supporter of agricultural interests and played a pivotal role in the debates surrounding the Corn Laws, advocating for their retention to protect British farmers.
In addition to his political endeavors, the Duke of Richmond was a notable figure in the world of sports, particularly cricket and horse racing. He was a founding member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and an avid patron of Goodwood Racecourse, which remains one of the most prestigious racing venues in the UK.
The engraving of Charles Gordon-Lennox, 5th Duke of Richmond, by H. Cook, is a significant artistic representation of the Duke, capturing his distinguished appearance and bearing. This work, published around 1835 by Frank William Wilkin, is part of the National Portrait Gallery's collection, volume IV. The engraving not only serves as a visual documentation of the Duke's likeness but also reflects the artistic styles and techniques of the period. Richmond's legacy, both in politics and sports, continues to be remembered and celebrated, with his contributions having left a lasting impact on British history.
