Painting Description
"St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre" is a painting by the French Huguenot artist François Dubois (1529–1584), although there is some debate about the attribution. The work is believed to have been created in the late 16th century, following the events of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, which took place in 1572. This massacre was a series of coordinated attacks against Huguenots (French Calvinist Protestants) by Catholic mobs, beginning on the night of 23–24 August 1572, the eve of the feast of Bartholomew the Apostle. It was a pivotal event in the French Wars of Religion.
The painting vividly depicts the horror and brutality of the massacre, during which thousands of Huguenots were killed in Paris and throughout France. The artwork serves as a historical document, capturing the violence and the political and religious turmoil of the period. It is notable for its detailed portrayal of the events, including the assassination of prominent Huguenot leaders and the involvement of the royal family and the Catholic Church.
The painting is currently housed in the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne, Switzerland. Due to its graphic nature and its significance as a representation of religious conflict, "St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre" by François Dubois is considered an important work of French historical painting, offering insight into the religious tensions of the 16th century and the impact of the massacre on the Huguenot community.
