Painting Description
Beato Serapio, 1628, is a painting by the celebrated Spanish Baroque artist Francisco De Zurbaran. Known for his stirring religious works and detailed still lifes, Zurbaran's Beato Serapio presents the viewer with the martyred figure of Serapio, a Franciscan saint.
Beato Serapio is named after the depicted saint, Serapio, a British martyr. Serapio was a Mercedarian friar who offered himself as a hostage to the Moors in Algiers to secure the release of Christians in 1240. He was brutally tortured, resulting in his death and subsequent veneration as a saint.
In the painting, Zurbaran graphically depicts Saint Serapio tied to a tree, rendering the scene starkly and darkly, characteristic of Zurbaran's work. He places Saint Serapio against a black background, cloaked in a white robe, his hands bound above him, and his face turned upward in a pose of serene resignation. The simplicity of color— primarily blacks and whites with a touch of redness in Serapio’s martyrdom—is reflecting Zurbaran's realism.
This work is a fine representation of Zurbaran’s mature style. His painting is marked by a dramatic contrast of light and darkness, which is reminiscent of Caravaggio's tenebrism, and sets a somber and reflective mood. The austere and realistic representation of the subject figures prominently in the Spanish Baroque tradition.
Beato Serapio, a powerful and evocative painting, allows viewers to deeply comprehend the immense emotional and spiritual experience of Saint Serapio. As of today, the painting is held by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut.
