Painting Description
''The Clothed Maja'' (Spanish: ''La Maja Vestida'') is a famous oil on canvas painting by the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, created between 1800 and 1805. It is a companion piece to ''The Nude Maja'' (Spanish: ''La Maja Desnuda''), and both paintings are notable for their daringly sensual subject matter, which was highly unusual for the time period. ''The Clothed Maja'' depicts the same woman who appears in ''The Nude Maja'', but this time she is fully dressed in contemporary attire.
The identity of the woman portrayed in both paintings has long been the subject of speculation, with some suggesting she may be the Duchess of Alba, with whom Goya was rumored to have had an affair, or Pepita Tudó, the mistress of Prime Minister Manuel de Godoy. However, the true identity of the model remains unknown. The paintings were owned by Godoy, and after his fall from grace, they were confiscated by the Spanish Inquisition due to their indecent and immoral nature.
''The Clothed Maja'' measures 95 cm × 190 cm and is renowned for its exquisite depiction of the textures and patterns of the subject's clothing, as well as the relaxed and confident pose of the model. The painting is a prime example of Goya's skill in portraiture and his ability to capture the character and mood of his subjects. The work is also significant for its influence on the development of modern portrayals of the female form.
Today, ''The Clothed Maja'' and ''The Nude Maja'' are both housed in the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain, and are considered masterpieces of Spanish art. They continue to intrigue and captivate audiences with their enigmatic subject and the story behind their creation, as well as their important place in the history of Western art.
